What is Rollover?
In futures trading, rollover refers to the process of moving positions from a contract that is about to expire to one with a later expiration date. Since futures contracts have a set expiration, traders who want to keep their positions open in a liquid market need to roll over to the new contract with higher trading volume.
What happens if I don’t perform the Rollover on time?
If you don’t roll over on time, you may face:
-
Lower liquidity and higher volatility, with wider spreads.
-
Forced liquidation, as some brokers will close positions before expiration.
-
Physical delivery of the underlying asset (for certain commodity contracts).
-
Price gaps when opening a new position in the next contract.
When should you perform the Rollover?
The timing for rollover varies by market, but generally follows these patterns:
-
Stock Indices (ES, MES, NQ, MNQ, YM, MYM, RTY, M2K) → Quarterly (March, June, September, December)
-
Metals (GC, MGC, SI, SIL, HG) → Monthly / (PL, PA) Quarterly (March, June, September, December)
-
Energy (CL, MCL, BZ, RB, NG, HO) → Monthly
-
Livestock (LE, GF, HE) → Monthly or according to a specific calendar
-
Currencies (6E, 6B, 6A, 6C, 6S, 6J, 6M, 6N, 6L, 6R) → Quarterly (March, June, September, December)
Rollover is typically done about a week before the current contract expires, when the volume in the new contract exceeds the volume of the old one. You can check each instrument’s volume on the CME website.
Futures contracts use a month code to indicate expiration:
Example: The code for an E-mini S&P 500 contract expiring in March 2025 would be ESH25 (ES = E-mini S&P 500, H = March, 25 = 2025).
